Most often my starting point is with the clay, either the robust textured feel of stoneware, which gives a purposeful feel to the pots made with it, or the silkiness of porcelain, altogether a flightier material, looking soft but vitrified and with a deceptive degree of backbone.

The clay dictates the glazes I use, and the look and feel of the finished work. In either case, I am aiming to make pots to be used, whether for a comforting cuppa on the breakfast table or to match a more reflective mood.
